I think every photographer needs to see this…
05 Oct 2011I can’t be bothered really explaining why every photographer needs to see this…

So I’m one of those people who love eco friendly solutions. Little known fact that if I do the makeup for my own shoots all the makeup is animal product free and cruelty free, most of my props are recycled and when I print photographs I try to print them on recycled sources. However one little minor setback has been brushes.
My incredible friend Becca Kennedy is the main makeup artist I use (aside from a couple of others if I can’t get Becca) because I love her attitude to makeup and being eco friendly. Shes always trying to find new ways to improve on old habits, in this case using animal fur for all makeup brushes has been the only option for professional makeup artists for years.
However when she approached me to help her do a photoshoot for her new artical on Two Six and Brush she was bursting at the seams to tell me that the brushes she was using were made not of animal fur, but entirely out of bamboo and other synthetic sources. Not only that but that they came from a company that fully supported much of the ideals that both Becca and I support.
Becca, Samantha Taylor (our wonderfully patient and incredibly fun to work with model!) and I had a total ball doing this quirky panda and bamboo themed shoot…

After the shoot Bec gave me the set she was working with and ever since then I haven’t looked back! I love them to pieces!
So go on over to Two Six and Brush to read her reviews!

Awesome!
Today Moira came around needing a break from the world. See the thing about Moira and I is that were nearly yin and yang. She’s the loud one, I’m the quiet one, She’s the thrill seeker, I’m the stay at home type. But we ground each other and compliment each other in ways that seem totally mystical to other people. She pulls me out of my homely box, I put her back into hers. It works well.
It’s been such a long time since I had a working camera in the house that I forgot that my wonderful friend Andi lent me her Cannon 7D, so today while we were sitting around the table sharing a cup of tea we decided to do an impromptu shoot.
It was very quick, no makeup, no real preparation. Just back to the old days when Moira and I used to take photos in the backyard using my old 35mm Pentax z70, no lights, no reflectors, just natural sunlight. I have been craving that sort of shoot for a long time. For too long everything I have done is totally studio based. It was time to break the mould and do something old… but new.
It felt so good just to use a camera without the burdon of sync cables or wireless receivers. It was almost weird not to have flashes going off all the time, but it was so worth it. Mr Crewdson told me… shoot without the photoshop for a bit and see how that feels. I resisted that advice for a long time. But in reality he was probably right. This felt pretty damned good.
Here are the results…

So people I totally nearly forgot to mention!
I’m now an official member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers! How exciting! If your interested in finding out more about them check out http://www.aipp.com.au/
I also have two exhibitions I’m in on September the 1st. So pop on down to Adelaide. Their both on the same street so it’s going to be a totally fun night of photographic craziness and… well I’ll be there so come say hi to me! Its going to be insane! Check out the exhibitions page for more info!
It’s been a long few weeks and I wish I had something happy to update about. I do! I really do! I have so much to update about. But today calls for a diferent sort of update. Maybe an open thankyou letter?
For those who don’t know for the last two and a bit years I have had support in my photographic practice by a few wonderful people. There are namely two who hand me everything I ever could ask for and more on one shiny silver platter, they are the reason I am able to do what I do and they are the reason I have the chance to work so hard at it too.
When Jack hired me to retouch for him, I didn’t know I would get a whole lot more than I bargained for in terms of a job. In-fact what I ended up with was a lifestyle, a family I love dearly and so many memories and wonderful days I can’t help but feel pretty sad a massive part of that is missing.
Jack gave me access to equipment I had only ever dreamed of using, a space to work in that I could be myself, he had faith in me that I didn’t even know anyone could have and a family I so very much wanted.
Last week Jack passed away after a long battle with a dodgy heart. I always thought Jack was immortal, he was the kid of guy that wouldn’t let being in hospital so sick he could hardly breathe keep him down. Instead he got up, kept going and really powered on through. The night he got the transplant I was ecstatic. I really was. Finally after watching someone who wasn’t just a friend but who I considered to be family be so sick and so tired I was glad to hear that there was finally some hope.
But on Wednesday the 10th I received a text message to tell me he had left us. I have to say I have been so sad ever since.
So here is a big thankyou to Jack. For all the help, for giving me the time, the skills, the energy and the faith to be able to do what it is I do. You are already missed so deeply.
Gee

I have some pretty damned talented friends.
In fact… I have the kind of friends worth bragging about really. From fine folk who can photograph stuff in ways that can make us question the world, to those who can write stories that can move mountains, to the ones who can see the world through paintbrushes and wacom tablets. One may have even worked on VFX for Harry Potter… another is a host on the Magnarook Footy Show and a few more are rockstars.
In the end though, the ones I’m so stupidly excited to talk about today is the incredibly talented duo who go by the name of Manic Game Studios. To me their Matt and Jamie. Matt the guy who I met at a Deviant Art meet all those years ago when I first moved to Adelaide and Jamie the guy I have had endless MSN conversations about anything you could possibly think about.
Both of these guys are awesome.
Awesome not because their just good friends, but because they made something really cool.
They made a game. Which is an achievement to say the least. But you know how friends can sometimes make something and you have to say its awesome because their friends?
Well I didn’t feel as if i had to say this was awesome just to save face. It actually IS awesome.
Its called Critcal Mass and critics are saying it could be the next bejeweled or peggle… that’s some big words.
When Matt and Jamie first showed this thing to me I literally sat there going “I HAVE AWESOME FRIENDS WHO MAKE AWESOME STUFF!!!!!” – I may have done a dance or two (wich may seem a bit much, but if you know me, you know that dancing comes with excitement over something people have made)
Critical mass is what happens when a rubix cube and bejeweled get married, have a baby and live totally happily ever after. It’s addictive, its sleek, its fun, its pure epic win.
And when you think that it was made by two Auzzie guys… it really does give you hope that the typical Auzzie battler can make awesome happen.
Don’t believe me? Check out their website, download a demo, check out the reviews. It all points to “epic awesome”

I have a rather big post today, mostly because I have so much to share with you.
Firstly… I finally and greatfully finished this…
This one is called – “It’s because of our plans man”
It is indeed the third Strange Lonesome Monster and while its diferent to the others, It’s following the same story. What story? They have no story right?
Well I guess they do. I’ll get to that another day.
The title is from “Built then Burnt hurrah Hurrah” – A song by A Silver Mt Zion. It’s the song nearly every piece of my work is based on or around.
Its Because of Our Plans Man, was actually mostly done for a few months now, however because it was missing something it sat on my harddrive waiting for that right moment.
Cue my housemates mum Allison Millcock coming to visit. I helped Allison out with buying cameras a few years ago, and now she is Christmas Islands most awesome wildlife photographer and has had her photography in newspapers everywhere. I’m so proud of her you have no idea. Well… she is the wonderful woman who photographed the two birds that are included into this image. Thankyou so much Allison for helping me finish this piece. Your the greatest!
I really like it, I loved playing with paint to make it.
I love this even more considering this is one of my best friends Moira Norwood. She even has my name tattooed on her ring finger and I have a little ampersand that matches the one she has behind her ear. Thats love there kids.
Speaking of love… I was a little down today and was told by a friend to watch this…
All I can say is WOW. What a woman. I’m totally and completely in love with her poetry now and have been you tubing it all night whilst updating this website.
OH WEBSITE UPDATES!!!!
So as I mentioned I was going to slowly make this website a bit more suited to my needs. Well here it is. It’s still in its early stages but you will notice the category’s already starting to form. Make sure you keep checking by as more and more stuff gets added, Especially to the written word section. I’m excited!
Goodnight dudes! Don’t forget to leave your comments/thoughts/bla bla bla here! I’m always checking in
Okay, I get asked maybe twice a week if I can help someone out with a step by step on how to use photoshop.
The truth is often I have to refuse to answer those questions, not because I don’t want to answer them (I really do!) but in amongst working for all you fine people I rarely get the time to sit down and really explain what it is I do and how I do it.
Remember I’m hands for hire… so if you ever get overwhelmed with photoshop, who ya gonna call? GEE GREENSLADE! (oh my I have been watching too much ghost busters. Sorry guys!)
Any way, the point I’m trying to make is that if you have photoshop, if it makes you pull your hair out and cry. If you can’t take the pain of guessing any longer the page you need to know about is this one… http://missgee.net/digital-art-workshops
If you know of anyone who may love this, make sure you forward them the link too and quickly! There are very limited places!
You must have a working copy of Photoshop and your own computer.
Cheers!
Gee
OH MY! I haven’t updated this thing in what feels like forever!
I got lost playing Portal 2 and working hard in the studio…
Well… Sort of.
This is me with fellow photographers Matt Carty and Julia Thomas. I have been seeing these guys a fair bit lately as we are putting together work for a small exhibition of photographers photographing photographers. It’s really just an excuse for all of us to get together, hang out and take fun photos of each other. This photo warms my heart. I was photographing Matt. I’m the idiot with the tea towel on her hear. I swear I’m a professional!!!
Aside from that there have been wispers around the place of me taking a step back from photography for a while and taking up writing. This indeed is a half truth.
I am still taking on select client work, so if your interested in some retouching or photography don’t hesitate to give me a burl. I’m pretty booked up at the moment so if I the easiest way to get to me is via e-mail.
However yes I am making much more time for writing. It’s been too long! So expect to see this site morph and change over the next few months. I have the plans sitting here ready to roll on ways to expand this site in so many ways it’s going to be crazy getting it all happening.
Also I will leave ya’all with a little gem I found.
Years ago a uni lecturer told me that flash couldn’t really ever make good art… I beg to differ.
This made me smile
